Bolivia Hill has been labelled a ‘death trap’ following the death of a motorcyclist on Tuesday.
A 21-year-old Armidale man died after he failed to negotiate a turn on the New England Highway on the northern side of Bolivia Hill about 56km north of Glen Innes.
The man crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided with a rock wall shortly before 11:30am.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Glen Innes Police Acting Inspector Laurie Cattell said early examinations of the scene and witness statements indicated that speed may have been a contributing factor.
A section of the New England Highway was closed in both directions for more than six hours following the accident.
The accident has become the eleventh fatal motor vehicle accident in the region so far this year.
Member for New England Tony Windsor has labelled Bolivia Hill a ‘death trap’.
Mr Windsor said in November last year the New England community was sending a message to the Federal Government about the stretch of highway.
“No doubt it is a death trap,” he said. “People have died there.
“It is the worst part of the new England Highway within the electorate and the last hill that needs to be fixed.”
Mr Windsor said on Tuesday he would continue to put the issue before the federal government.
“Bolivia Hill is an area where tragedies are going to continue to occur until it is properly fixed,” he said. “Federal Minister Albanese is well aware of the condition of the road having been repeatedly told by me in the Parliament.
“The NSW RTA (Roads and Traffic Authority), who are responsible for the prioritising of works on the New England Highway, are also fully aware of the condition of the road but have continued to block its prioritisation.
“Minister Albanese was to visit the area but the calling of the election has disrupted the program. I will be informing him of this most recent tragedy and again seeking its upgrade.”
Bolivia Hill was not included on a recent list of notorious crash sites released as locations for mobile speed cameras.
