If there was ever a thought that crossword puzzles were a waste of time then 80-year-old Merle Elliott has disproved it, after winning a new car in a magazine crossword competition.
Ms Elliott said she had been doing the crosswords in That’s Life every week for the past five years to keep her brain active. She said this has been the first time she has won a prize.
“There are lots of prizes you can win I saw a sewing machine and thought that would be nice. Never ever in my wildest dreams did I think I’d win a car,” she said.
Her 2009 Holden Barina arrived in Glen Innes on Monday afternoon.
“I got such a shock. I just couldn’t believe it, it hasn’t been real until the car actually got here,” she said.
“I’ve never won anything big in my life other than a load of wood. It’s amazing.”
Mrs Elliott said she was not sure if she was the first person in Glen Innes to win a car from the magazine competition.
“It just goes to show that these prizes can come to the country,” she said.
But Mrs Elliott said she planned to sell the car because she needed an automatic, and already had one. She said the money from the sale of the car would be put to good use to build a new driveway.
When asked if she would continue to do the crosswords and send them in each week she said: “oh yes I love doing them, I’m addicted.”
