Family and friends farewelled Glen Innes boy Tobias (Toby) Crothers and 19 other high school graduates from across the Hunter and surrounding areas last week as they began their training journey as officers in the Australian Defence Force.
The young men and women were appointed as officer cadets at Canberra’s Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) by Senior Military Recruiting Officer Captain Danita McGregor at a ceremony last Friday at the Fort Scratchley Function Centre.
As officer cadets they undertake a three-year military and leadership training program while studying undergraduate degrees in arts, business, engineering, information technology, science or technology through the University of New South Wales at ADFA. Toby’s father Sam said his son would pursue a combined science/economics degree.
Toby is following in the footsteps of his older brother Lewis who graduated last year from the academy with a degree in business management. Lewis will now undertake a year of officer training at Royal Duntroon before committing at least another five years to the regular army.
The brothers’ grandparents still live in Glen Innes when the boys grew up attending primary school before completing high school at The Armidale School (TAS).
