Glen Innes residents will this year have the lure of cold hard cash to encourage them to shop local in the lead up to Christmas and this week is the last chance for businesses to get on board.
The Spend in Glen promotion was initiated last year with 70 businesses putting up their hand to bring Christmas shopping back to town and offering one lucky shopper a brand new Holden Barina.
The result was more than 45,000 entries from customers of the businesses when the time came to draw a winner at the Glen Innes Town Hall after six weeks.
Promotion coordinator Nicole Schafer said the search was on again for participating businesses and while a committee of eight had been established to run the shopping initiative more businesses needed to become involved.
“Last year there was a fantastic response. Both the businesses and shoppers really got behind Spend in Glen. The streets were really buzzing in the lead up to Christmas which is something that had been lacking in previous years,” she said.
“So far this year we have got 35 businesses and we would really love a lot more. Some are unable to be part of it again this year but there are others who can come on board. Those who took part last year really noticed the increase in customers.”
The prize for the winning entry may have changed but the format remains the same as last year. Each time a shopper spends $20 or more at a participating business they will be entered into the draw.
The amount of cash on offer will be confirmed when the businesses are finalised and it is expected that a first place cash prize will be accompanied by local shopping dollars for second and third prize.
“We wanted to offer a few more prizes this year and really want it to be a large sum of money for first prize. For that to happen we need as many businesses as possible to get involved,” Mrs Schafer said.
“The shoppers really get involved in it and will shop more when they have the chance to win such a big prize.”
The promotion will begin on November 16 with the winners to be drawn at a special presentation a week prior to Christmas.
