It has been a much sought after prize since it was first introduced in 1976 by the Broadbent family of ‘Fernleigh’, Red Range to increase the stakes at the annual horse sports event that was first held in 1956.

The flag race decides the winner each year and in from the very first year was hotly contested with many older riders competing against their own children to try and win the shield.

Bev Smith was the first winner riding Socks and the most recent recipient was Lucinda Colley riding Bacardi.

Over the years a number of notable names have been added to the shield with the Newman family of Emma, Maryanne and Perry being the most frequent having won the event six years in total.

The competition will return to the Red Range Sportsground on December 19 and 20 with approximately 700 entries expected. Secretary Kylie Falconer said there have been improvements made in the lead up to the weekend.

“The arena was renovated in late 2008 and the surface should provide good going for cattle and horses alike. This year we have increased prize money on offer for all event thanks to the support of existing sponsors and new ones,” she said.

“The sports day has a new format compared to previous years. The program has been changed to make the day more fun for the young and young at heart with ten events to be competed in including the straight barrel race, sack race and bounce pony.”
