LOCAL farmer Denis Haselwood will represent Glen Innes to talk about the big issues facing agriculture in the region and around the state at the NSW Farmers’ Association’s Annual Conference later this month.
Mr Haselwood, the president of the Glen Innes branch of the NSW Farmers Association, is preparing to head to Sydney for the conference on July 19, 20
and 21.
The president of the branch for the past year, Mr Haselwood has been attending the conference for over 20 years. He said there are a number of important issues he will raise at the upcoming conference.
“One of the biggest issues is the appalling handling of the cattle export ban to Indonesia and the entire
ramifications it had on the beef market,” he said.
“It has a huge impact on the beef market right around Australia.”
Mr Haselwood said the proposed carbon tax will also be a hot topic.
“The carbon tax and the implications of the carbon tax is a big issue,” he said.
Mr Haselwood also believes mining will be another topic that creates some heated discussion.
“One of the other big issues, not so much for the New England, is the mining situation,” he said.
“The coal seam gas thing is something that could come close to our area though.
“Just about everything that impinges on agriculture will be talked about,” he said.
Mr Haselwood said the economic side of agriculture will also be discussed.
“Things have been looking up for us in the grazing industry because of strong meat prices, wool prices are coming up as well,” he said.
“It is the economic thing that impinges on us every day.”
Mr Haselwood said he is looking forward to the conference.
“I’ve been going for 20 years and it’s something I enjoy going to.”
