The 2009 New England Summit, which took place in Armidale on Saturday, has united groups from the New England region to address issues relevant to the area and create solutions.
Organiser of the summit, Independent Member for New England Tony Windsor, was quite satisfied with the participation from the delegates representing 40 community organisations.
“All participants were very considered and understanding of issues impacting on the different groups, they were enthusiastic in their support of the 21 resolutions and raised other points that would assist in promoting solutions to the issues raised,” Mr Windsor said.
Delegates agreed on major issues that affected the New England and pledged action as well as support.
“The summit resolutions all have associated follow up actions which we will be pursuing,” Mr Windsor said.
The 21 resolutions addressed issues such as: maximising the opportunities offered by the National Broadband Network when it is rolled out; enhancing aged care facilities in the region; supporting the proposed inland rail link between Melbourne and Brisbane, and improving services to Aboriginal communities.
The summit’s resolutions encouraged the RTA to undertake work in particular sections of the New England Highway, including Bolivia Hill and supporting the construction of a heavy vehicle bypass at Tenterfield.
As well as improving roads the summit also proposed: continual support of the Australian Defence Force in the region, welcoming the Federal Government’s movements towards more funding for universities and supporting growth of rural infrastructure.
Glen Innes was represented at the summit by mayor Steve Toms, who sought to maximise the benefits for the Glen Innes region.
“It was a positive experience and involved all the mayors in the region and other community groups,” he said.
