The were two representative games of junior cricket played last Sunday at Armidale.
The Glen Innes Under 12’s played Armidale. Glen Innes batted first and got off to a dreadful start losing two wickets in their first over. The pairing of Jacob Howard and Brock Simpkins took the score to 42 before Simpkins lost his wicket after making 19 runs. Howard was next to go after he had made 13 runs. The wickets then fell at regular intervals until Glen Innes were all out for 82 runs. Luke Hodgson and Braydon Gallagher offered some resistance in the middle and lower order. Armidale went in to chase down the runs and got off to a worse start then Glen through some good bowling by Simpkins (4 wickets for 0 runs after 2 overs). Armidale were reeling at 4 wickets for 11 runs after 4 overs. However their lower order batsmen consolidated to take the score to 8 for 139 runs in the 35th over. They passed Glen ’s total in the 21st over with the score at 7 for 86 runs. Armidale won the match by three wickets.
In the Under 14’s match, Armidale elected to bat on a good wicket. Their openers got the side off to a good start taking the score to 47 before the fall of the first wicket. Some good batting by their top order took the score to 4 wickets for 106 runs, however a small collapse had the score at 7 for 118 runs in the 27th over before some lusty hitting by the lower order batsmen saw Armidale all out for 195 runs in the 44th over. Jake Every (3 for 26 runs after 5 overs) was the pick of the bowlers for Glen. Glen fielded well and took some excellent catches. Jay Gallagher took a good out field catch and a sharp slips catch. James Cooper took an excellent caught and bowled catch and Scott Hodder took a good gully catch. Nathan Marzulli and Jake Every also took catches. Glen Innes went in to chase down the large total. The openers of Jacob Balchin and Jake Every took the score to 36 runs before Every lost his wicket (17 runs). Balchin was joined at the crease by Scott Hodder who took the score to 76 runs before Balchin lost his wicket on 24 runs. Hodder was joined at the crease by James Cooper who continued to build partnerships. Hodder was the next wicket to fall after he had made 30 runs. Two other wickets fell without contribution to the score and then Cooper fell with his score also on 30 runs. Jake Willis then came to the crease and offered solid resistance with Nick Whan. At the fall of Whan’s wicket (13 runs) the remaining wickets fell quickly with Glen all out for 157 runs in the 43rd over. Willis remained not out on 11 runs.
The 40 sundry runs given away by Glen proved the difference.
