Rep side back in action

24 Jan, 2012 09:17 AM
Tavern almost certainly nailed down a semi-final berth after they thumped an undermanned Platform side on Saturday.

Batting first, Platform slumped to 3 for 23 after six overs, but a solid partnership between Chris (12) and Barry Reibelt (12) steadied the ship for Platform.

But after the father and son combination was broken, and having only seven players, Platform were bundled out for 78.

Adam Morris (3-12) was the pick of the bowlers for Tavern, while Ash Penstone (2-18) also bowled well.

Tavern lost three wickets in their run chase.

Although Platform were able to get an early wicket, when Chris Elvins was trapped in front LBW off the bowling of opposing skipper Chris Reibelt.

Neale Smith (37) and Nathan Purvis (14) then put on a 48 run stand for the second wicket to steer Tavern to victory.

Aside from Reibelt, Cody Hogan (1-11) and Dave Balchin (1-16) were the other wicket takers.

The other match of the round, between Golf Club and Colts, was abandoned after the two sides decided that the newly laid Lynch Oval pitch was unfit to play on.

That game will be rescheduled to be played at a later date.

This coming weekend sees Services play Golf Club at King George Oval, while Colts play Tavern at Lynch Oval.

Meanwhile, the Glen Innes senior representative side will be in action this Sunday, when they take on Inverell in the fourth and final round of the MA Connolly Cup.

Neither side can make the finals of the competition but, the match will be far from a dead rubber.

Pride and bragging rights will be on the line after the first match between the sides earlier in the season ended in a tie.

Needing only three runs to win with four wickets in hand, Glen collapsed to lose their four wickets for two runs.

They will be out to redeem themselves on Sunday when they take to the field at King George Oval and will also be looking to find some form ahead of the following weekend’s T20 Champions League in Gunnedah.

A strong 15 man squad has been named for the match.

All players are asked to contact Ben Lonergan on 0429 488 165 or Adrian Sippel on 0418 448 900 by Thursday afternoon if they are unavailable for this match.

The final 11 will be decided on Friday morning and players will be contacted to confirm their selection.
