Services derail defending champs

At Lynch Oval Services won the toss and elected to bat against Railway Tavern.

The first wicket fell in the fourth over when Nick Lehman was run out for 3 before opener Jason Ferris formed a solid partnership of 101 runs with Nathan Kent.

Tavern were made to pay dearly for missed opportunities with both Kent and Ferris dropped early on. Kent made 50 before being caught on the boundary( including four 4s and one 6). Ferris went on to make a fine 79 ( five 4s and three 6s) with Nathan Levy adding a quick 19.

Services finished there 30 overs at 8 for 187 after losing four quick wickets in succession for the addition of just 2 runs towards the tail. Ben Lonergan remained not out on 11 runs.

For Tavern Shad Bailey took 3 for 27, with Scott McLaren and Mitch Berridge taking 2 wickets each.

In reply Tavern were in all sorts of trouble losing 2 wickets in the second over with Tom McCarney taking 2 excellent catches off Ben Lonergan’s bowling(3 for 14 from 4 overs).

Tavern were reeling at 3 for 6 after just 4 overs before father and son inlaw combination of Neale Smith and Shad Bailey steadied the ship with a 73 run partnership. Bailey was removed shortly after drinks for 49 runs finding the boundary 8 times. Smith battled on till the 25th over before being caught out for 40 runs.

Tavern hung on till the 30th over falling well short of the target 9 for 116 with no other batsmen nearing double figures.

For Services Ian Hope took 3 for 5 from his 6 overs which included 3 maidens. Shawn Mepham also bowled tightly with 1 for 7 of 5 overs.

At Wilson Park NEC Colts batted first and had a solid start with Justin Bushell (27) and Peter Rajko adding 34 runs before Bushell was dismissed.

Rajko scored 31 runs before John Grant came to the crease with an impressive 34 not out. Grant Jones added 12 at the tail before Colts finished ther 30 overs at 9 for 164.

Best of the bowlers for the Golf Club was Rhys Davidson with 4 for 17 from six overs. Dave Balchin also captured 2 wickets.

In reply Golf Club were off to a horror start with Balchin falling to the first ball of the opening over. Arthur Latham scored 20 runs before Blake Steel scored a big hitting 21 and Peter Cole 22 runs before Golf Club were bundled all out in the 26th over for 127 runs.

For colts Peter Rajko took 3 for 35 in 6 overs, Jakob Key 2 for 31 of 6 overs , Chris Reibelt 2 for 15 in 2 overs and Justin Bushell 2 for 9 of 4.1 overs.
