Fun run attracts all walk of life

03 Nov, 2009 08:21 AM
SEVENTY TWO athletes from as far as the Central Coast took part in this year’s Glen Gallop fun run.

Twelve energetic runners entered the 10km event. Michael Smart from Armidale was too strong for local Malcolm Donnelly, finishing the race in 39.30 minutes. Michael Fritsch returned from the Central Coast to come third. The first female home was 15-year-old Krystal Cagney from Bundarra, who finished fourth overall in a time of 47.05. Megan Williams came second in the female section, with Pauline Smith from Armidale third.

The 5km event was again dominated by visitors, with the Macpherson family from Scone being a force to reckon with, taking four of the first nine places. Keith and Gerald Macpheron set a very fast pace taking out first and second place in the times of 17.19 mins and 17.20 mins. Dad, David, was fourth overall and sister Claire was second home in the female section. Byron Smith from Armidale was third overall. Rhiana Newberry, fresh from her USA experience was first female, first under16 female and fifth overall with a time of 21.09. Stacey Wells from Inverell was third home for the girls. The under 16 male section was won by Byron Smith, followed by Jay Gallagher and Harrison Miller. The Under 13 male section was won by Mitchell Cooke, followed by Nick Alley and Michael Alley. Seven-year-old Disa Smart from Armidale was first home in the girls Under 13 section, ahead of Kirra Willis and Ebony Gallagher. Patrick Dawson was the first disabled runner home in a time of 35.36.

The dog and handler was a feisty contest with Brayden Gallagher and Napoleon beating Steve Toms and Wally for the cans of dog meat. The first husband and wife team home was Kym and Marcus Brumby followed by Jan and Graham Miller. Susan and Callum Hayden took out the team event and the trophy for the first female team home was won by Kirra Willis, Ebony Gallagher and Cassidy Mossman.

Despite the aching muscles, 25 hopefuls then lined up for the elimination process for the inaugural Dash for Cash handicap sprint.

The final line up consisted of Riley Martin and Brianna Donnelly (under 5s), Lachie Martin and Gracie Martin (u10s), Mitchell Cook and Bridget Jones (u13s), Byron Smith (who was fastest after the age races) and Claire Macpherson (u16s), Lachlan Miller (u17s), Malcolm Donnelly (u40s male), Kerrie Mossman (Open women), Graham Miller (over 50’s men) and Ted Post (over 80’s). Undaunted by her age nor the strong field of competitors four year old Brianna Donnelly raced home in a time of 11.40 to take the money with Ted Post second in a time of 11.56. The majority of the field galloped home two metres behind Brianna.

Glen Gallop would like to thank local businesses, service clubs and emergency services for all their support and sponsorship.
