Another perfect Autumns day saw a good crowd turn out at Glen Rugby Park to see a great tussle between last year’s premiers St Alberts College and the Elks.
After winning the toss, the Elks elected to receive the kick off and run south. From the kick off the game quickly developed into a test of the two styles of play. St Alberts were strong at the line out and quick to the ruck and mall and then spun the ball wide to their pacey backs. The Elks with a few more miles on the clock relied on their old heads and defence which proved hard to crack.
Continued pressure by the Elks saw a penalty awarded at the 10 minute mark which Shad Bailey promptly slotted over for a three point lead.
After a see sawing battle at the break down the students strung together some quality possession and impressive broken field running to notch up three unconverted tries to take a 15-3 lead into the half time break.
The Elks knew the game was in the balance at half time and that they had to score the next points. The Elks go to man Stewart MacClintock delivered in usual style by making the extra effort to charge down a clearing kick, regather and score next to the post. The conversion put the score at 15-10.
Once the Elks had a sniff of getting back into the game the dynamics of the game changed and the next 20 minutes saw a very even contest with the students scoring again, the Elks scoring next to the goal posts with Captain Sam Baker scoring his first try this decade, to add to the other two he has scored in his career.
With 10 minutes to go the score of 20-17 was spot on in reflecting the game to date, the students deserved to be in front but only just.
St Alberts then showed why they are worthy favourites in the competition as they played smart football to pin Glen in their own half and continue to apply pressure both in attack and defence.
The Elks showed plenty of grit but unforced errors and fitness let them down in the dying stages of the game to see Albies score on full time.
As usual all the Elks had a red hot go across the park with Sam Baker receiving the man of the match, while points were picked up by Andrew Hall, Nathan Purvis, Troy Adams and Jason DeCleene. The Players Player was awarded to Ben Sharpe.
The Elks will play The Armidale Blues this Saturday at Glen Rugby Park at 3pm.
Any interested players are more than welcome to attend training at 6pm on Wednesday nights.
Meanwhile the New England schools under 16s and opens rugby union trials will be held this Sunday May 24 on the backfield of The Armidale School (Mann St) from 2:30pm until 4:30pm. Once selected the teams will train again next Sunday May 31 from 2:30pm until 4:00pm. The following weekend the boys head to Tamworth for the NSW Country Schools Championships.
