Mrs Sharman was among 582 recipients in the general division, announced by the governor-general Quentin Bryce. There are also 199 recipients receiving awards for their meritorious or military service.
Mrs Sharman has worn many community service hats over her 60 plus years in Glen Innes, after coming here as a 17-year-old to study nursing. She has held many active roles in health-related services such as the hospital auxiliary and fete, Garden Court Day Care Centre, Glenwood Gardens Aged Care Hostel, Glen Innes Family and Youth Support, NSW Carer’s Group, the Local Health Advisory Committee and the Karinya Aged Accommodation Association.
She remains active in the local Anglican Church, was a local government councillor from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s and has been involved in many community groups.
Past awards include the NSW Premiers Award in 1988, Glen Innes’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year in 1991, and the Centenary Medal and being made a Lions International Melvin Jones Fellow, both in 2001.
Mrs Sharman was shocked on receiving news of her OAM, and thanked her mentors from all walks of life, and particularly the unknown person who nominated her. She also thanked her family for their support, and Reverend Chris Brennan and past reverends for their spiritual support.
“Life’s a journey,” she said.
“To God be the glory for my journey.”
