“The new equipment will make an enormous difference to the team area and was provided to the area through funding from NSW headquarters,” Supt Chris Wallbridge said.
“It’s equipped with specialised equipment for members of our RAFT team to use, helping volunteers combat fires, protect life and property.
“The volunteers will be better able to tackle fires in remote locations while the fires are small, or inaccessible to our normal vehicles.”
Supt Wallbridge said the team — made up of members from across the area (Tenterfield, Glen Innes and Inverell) — will undergo specialised training and rigid medical and fitness testing. The next challenge will be helicopter training to enable them to be inserted into areas from the air during the upcoming fire season.
“Members regularly give up their time during emergencies to help the local community and are kept very busy responding to fire, motor vehicle accidents, and assisting other agencies as required,” Supt Chris Wallbridge said of the local Rural Fire Service team.
Volunteers are always needed, with a wide variety of roles available for anyone who is interested. For further information call (02) 6732 7046.
