Gordon’s close friend and local businessman Bill Munro said the news of the loss had spread through the town rapidly, with few locals untouched by the loss.
“You walk down the street and everyone’s doughy,” Mr Munro said. “One women burst into tears when she saw me on the street.
“Gordon taught at the primary school and at the high school and his wife Therese has taught for many years at the Catholic school, so there would be very few people in town not taught by one of them.”
Mr Munro said the news had devastated the town.
Mrs Creighton taught all six of the Munro children and the two men had been mates for decades, with rugby league forming a common bond. With Mr Munro’s son David now refereeing at NRL (National Rugby League) level and Mr Creighton a passionate supporter and past president of local rugby league club the Magpies, the two had much in common.
“He was just a lovely man. He was passionate, about football and about his kids,” Mr Munro said. “He had a loud voice and the kids weren’t game to muck up, but they didn’t want to because he was such a great teacher.
“The town is just shattered.”
