Coming in on the siren, the Elks stole the lead in a field-length dash to score in the final 30 seconds of the match.
Taking lead from half-back Nathan Purvis, the Elks opened that game to a strong start, regaining control from the kick-off with excellent tactical play from the forwards.
In spite of an Elk’s dominated first half, only three points separated the squads, the Elks taking lead after from a high tackle penalty.
Outstanding scramble defence from Billy Hartman and Adam Morris denied Guyra points on a number of occasions, while a lapse in the Elks’ defensive line saw Guyra’s fullback score on the half-time siren, taking the score to 7—3 at the break.
Regaining the Elks’ lead, a slick backline move finished off with Jay Hampson drawing the fullback passing to Adam Morris to score carried the score to 10-3.
In a point for point scramble, Guyra capitalised on a three-man overlap to score while Adam Morris stole a second opportunity to score in the corner with successful conversion.
As the game closed in on the final 5 minutes, Tom Benton and Fergus McIntosh proved tireless in both offense and defence, while Sam Price pried a last minute opportunity, breaking through the Guyra line before passing to Lachlan Perkins to sprint away to score in the final seconds of the match.
Perkins received three points for his efforts with two awarded to Adam Morris and one point awarded to Tom Benton, with highlight players Billy Hartman and Michael Miller commended for their efforts.
Settling into their new home ground, the Elks have capitalised on recent rain, with the Showground showing excellent improvement for both players and spectators.
