Run in anticipation for this year’s Youth Inspire careers expo, held on Tuesday, April 8, drawing over 500 students from across the New England region, the competition was aimed at encouraging young emerging writers with industry exposure and an opportunity to share their stories and community experiences.
With a number of entries from local schools and beyond, Evelyn’s intimate reflection on the Danthonia orange orchard and Kate’s detailed reminiscence of her big-hearted race-horse Chips earned pride of place in the Examiner’s Tuesday editions on April 8 and 15 respectively.
Showing a great control of language and detail, Denis Blough secured second place for her reflection on the extraordinary life of her grandmother Nora Ann Royer growing up with missionary parents across the world, while Zachery Decker was a close runner up in the juniors division for his creative profile of the lure craftsman Les Barlow. Highly commended entrants Candice Decker and Darryl Domer showed excellent breadth of research to deliver insightful and detailed works on their respective subjects.
With a clever use of asides, Candice delved into the history of the New England region, while Darryl went further afield tracking the challenges and exploits of Pat Farmer in completing a incredible trek through 16 countries, exploring the North and South Poles in an effort to support the Red Cross charity organisation.
As the winners prepare to collect their prizes, with Evelyn and Kate winning a $50 voucher to be spent with local sponsors TSG The Shop in Glen, and Denise and Zachery each receiving a complementary movie pass to the local Chapel Theatre with support from the Glen Innes Arts Council, the Examiner congratulates all entrants on their efforts to produce insightful, intimate and detailed work and encourages emerging writers to continue producing excellent work.
