With a young team of nine men and one woman, aged predominantly 17 to 25 years, the Jelly Beans faced off against significantly larger state teams from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, holding their own in 480kg, 510kg, 510kg mixed and 540kg, six-competitor events.
Stealing the show in the 540kg event, the local team put on an excellent show to a crowded house, enduring the longest pull of the event against the Brisbane Bulldogs.
The 540kg contest saw the Jelly Beans snag an early lead in the first end, but were narrowly defeated in a drawn-out second end, proving to be an intense endurance test.
Taking third place in the 480kg, 510kg, 510kg mixed and 540kg events, against Maitland and the Brisbane Bulldogs, the Jelly Beans went on to contest the outdoor event at Aberdeen on July 5.
Coming up against an evenly matched Bulldog’s line-up, the Jelly Beans secured an end from both Brisbane and Maitland, before the latter secured a win over the Bulldogs to take first place.
Locked in stalemate, the Jelly Beans and Bulldogs went into a tie-breaking pull for second place, where after tough competition teh Jelly Beans were ultimately outdone, claiming third place at the presentations held on Saturday evening.
Currently scouting for new members, the Jelly Beans are calling on local sportspeople to join the club as competitions continue. Interested persons can contact Malcolm on 0427 136 163 or 67 323 385.
