It was certainly the right weather and an appropriate setting for the Can Assist fundraiser at the Let’s Grow Railway Nursery on Saturday, where 60 visitors paid for a soup and damper spread while enjoying live entertainment and garden talks.

Maryn Burgess, president of the local Can Assist group which provides financial assistance to those struggling to meet their expenses while receiving cancer treatment, said 26 people from the Glen Innes Severn district battling cancer had so far received support from the Glen Innes chapter of the organisation since it was established here at the beginning of last year.
The funding pool received a $900 boost from Saturday’s event, where the small committee and nursery proprietor Julie Willis produced a variety of soups, accompanied by breads donated by local bakeries. Local musician Jason de Cleene provided entertainment while gardening guru Jenny Rogers shared her expertise on roses and rhododendrons.
Mrs Burgess said future fundraising ideas the committee is considering include a garden luncheon with fashion parade, but that there would be another street stall and raffle before Christmas.
Anyone with cancer needing financial assistance can phone 0498 756 607, where a local committee member will be able to provide assistance as to the avenues of support available through Can Assist.
