The funding follows visits earlier this year by former Mental Health Minister Kevin Humphries to both Men’s Sheds, at the invitation of Mr Marshall.
While presenting a $2,500 grant to Roy Powell of the Armidale Men’s Shed and President of the Glen Innes
Men’s Shed Paul Raper, Mr Rowell said the funds would help further build on the success of both facilities in addressing mental health.
“As I travel around NSW I am constantly impressed by the innovative ways Men’s Sheds manage to tackle mental health issues, and both the Armidale and Glen Innes facilities are great examples of that,” Mr Rowell said.
“As the first Men’s Shed in the New England region, Armidale Men’s Shed has gone from strength to strength and has made some really innovative steps to address a range of health issues.
“Through partnering with Armidale AM Rotary Club, Armidale Men’s Shed is not only tackling mental health issues, but has also developed a men’s health program aimed at encouraging men to take a more active role in managing their personal wellbeing.
“And unlike the name suggests, Armidale Men’s Shed is an inclusive community facility, running woodworking classes for women as well.”
“Glen Innes Men’s Shed will use their grant to expand their program offerings into computer classes for older men, allowing them to stay connected and socially engaged.
Mr Marshall commended the work of both Men’s Shed organisations for the way in which they had so successfully engaged local men in addressing mental health issues.
“I am exceptionally proud of the work that both the Armidale and
Glen Innes Men’s Sheds have been able to achieve in a relatively short period of time growing their membership and helping to get the mental health message out there,” he said.
“These facilities provide a welcoming, relaxed place for men to come together and talk with their peers about any problems they may be facing, which leads to great outcomes in avoiding the pitfalls of depression and social isolation.”
