After completing the NSW allschools carnival four kilometre run in a neat 13 minutes 49 seconds, the young hopeful bagged a ticket alongside Australia’s top 20 high school cross country runners on their way to the Sports Travel Australia cross country tour hosted by the United States and bringing together some of the best performing international athletes.
Coming off the back of numerous sporting achievements, including selection to the Combined High Schools’ athletics competition following North West wins in the 3000m and 1500m runs, the young hopeful has been hard at work training from his home at Pinkett on a five-day schedule.
With bags packed, Campion will fly into Los Angeles before heading into the centre of the United States to compete at the Foothill High School, Bonnie Springs Ranch and University of Nevada against the best from Canada, Australia and the US.
While the trip is promising a level of competition as yet unseen by the Pinkett local, with an extra 1000m to be covered on top of the regular four kilometre run, Campion said he was looking forward to pitting his efforts against the world’s best.
With young local athletes making an extended splash on the world stage, Glen Innes High School is quickly cementing a name for itself for producing top-performing students across a wide range of disciplines. Set to take off on Wednesday, September 17, Campion said he is hoping to bring home the win through the 16-day voyage returning on Thursday, October 2.
