A group of 34 walkers accompanied by 14 support vehicles will tread the roads through Glen Innes come October 1, on their way to Canberra.
Graham Brammer OAM – community liaison officer with the Wandering Warriors –said the effort is well worth it when you see how much can be raised and where the money is destined for.
“This is a regular event for us,” Mr Brammer said.
“It’s a group charity walk from Brisbane to Canberra this time around and we’ll be raising funds for returned service personnel and their families. This is our way of helping provide funds to the organisations that provide the support to these people,” he said.
Last year the walkers and support crew did the trip from Brisbane to Birdsville raising a whopping $120,000. The team hopes to raise even more this year as they trek the New England Highway south before taking the next highway west taking them towards Canberra.
The walkers will arrive on October 1 and will be staying overnight at the Glen Innes Show-grounds, with ground crews setting up on September 30. Military vehicles and a merchandise trailer will be set up to sell food to the public as part of the fundraiser.
Vehicles and food stall will remain until the walkers arrive at the Town Square, anticipated between 4 and 5 pm, then back to the showground for public view until 6.30pm.
