The Wandering Warriors were a hit with their audience at the Glen Innes and District Services Club on Wednesday night as a number of speakers regaled their eager listeners with stories and anecdotes from their adventures as part of Australian Defence Force’s Special Air Service (SAS).

While the more-disturbing aspects and certainly security-sensitive facets of their profession weren’t broached, there was still plenty of material to entertain the crowd, shared by some talented raconteurs.
The Wandering Warriors are a troupe of former SAS operatives, but they were accompanied by some active SAS members on their walk from Brisbane to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to raise awareness and funds for colleagues injured physically and/or mentally from their time in the SAS.
Glen Innes RSL sub-branch president Gordon Taylor said more than $1300 was raised for the cause at Wednesday night’s dinner alone, and he was pleased to report than 96 per cent of donations go to those the cause is aiming to support. Glen Innes Severn mayor Colin Price’s signature was added to the scroll of autographs collected from mayors along the route.
Mr Taylor accompanied the Wandering Warriors for 10 kilometres along the highway to Armidale the following morning, before waving them off to rejoin the crew later for celebrations at the Australian War Memorial. He said the Wandering Warriors walked out to Birdsville last year, but expressed an interest to do the New England Highway trek again next year, given the success of this year’s effort.
