Mr Marshall said the Carers Awards gave the region the opportunity to celebrate the significant contribution unpaid carers make to the person or the people they care for in their community.
“More than one in 10 people in NSW are carers; they can be anyone, parents, partners, brothers, sisters, friends, sons, daughters,” he said.
“These people are incredibly selfless and deserve our applause and appreciation as they provide regular unpaid support to those who, due to a disability, mental illness, health condition, ageing or dementia, are incapable of looking after themselves.
“Yvonne has been caring for family members most of her life and for the past 34 years has cared for her cousin who has Down syndrome and is blind.
“He lives with Yvonne who takes care of all his medical needs - an amazing woman with an enormous responsibility and a heart to match.
“I know Yvonne’s’ neighbours will say that she is their “rock” as they can rely on her to help out whenever they need, she is an incredibly caring woman and I was so very pleased to present her with this award.”
Mr Marshall said the NSW Government was committed to recognising carers and to ensure their needs were meet.
“The valuable social and economic contribution that carers make to the community and the persons for whom they care should be recognised and supported.”
