The water level at Beardy Waters Weir has dropped to approximately 400mm below the spillway (71 per cent of capacity). Glen Innes Severn Council’s development, regulatory and sustainability services director Graham Price said as a result of the continuing seasonal conditions council has no choice but to initiate the trigger for Level 4 water restrictions to be implemented.
Mr Price said that the hot weather and lack of flow into the Beardy means more water in the store is being lost to evaporation than to consumption. Level 4 restrictions mean that sprinklers are banned and hand-held hoses can be used only between 6pm and 7pm.
Buckets only are to be used when washing vehicles.
Further details of water restrictions and water savings initiatives can be found at www.gisc.nsw.gov.au or by contacting council’s Development, Regulatory and Sustainability Services Department on 6730 2350 or at 136 Church Street.
Level 6 water restrictions will be implemented – and pumping from the southern off-stream storage at the quarry will commence – if the Beardy Waters Weir drops to 38 per cent of capacity or 1200mm below the weir wall. The southern off-stream storage at the quarry will provide an additional 90 days of storage at Level 6 water restrictions.
Mayor Colin Price said the purchase of the quarry is already proving a good strategic option to provide additional water storage for residents.
“We acknowledge that there is a perception within the community that the quarry purchase drought-proofed the town. Unfortunately drought proofing still means water restrictions,” Councillor Price said.
“The Beardy is a wonderful supply in normal times, but when it stops running we only have the water that stored for the use of the town and therefore must make it last the unknown period of drought.”
Meanwhile Deepwater residents are advised that Level 2 restrictions are now in place. The Deepwater supply is approximately 30 per cent full. Level 2 restrictions means sprinklers are banned and buckets can only be used for paved areas.
