LAST year may have been the year of the processor in the cattle industry, but if Monday’s Glen Innes saleyards cattle sale was anything to go by, 2015 may be the year of the producer.

Monday’s sale saw top prices for Cattle with Colin Say and Co. agent Shad Bailey telling The Examiner one locally bred cow sold for a massive price.
“One cow weighed 776 kilos selling at 225 cents a kilo and returned 1732.50 it was owned Kevin and Gina Feakins of Glencoe,” he said. “The cow market prior to Christmas ... has jumped 70 cents per kilo, which is incredible to see that jump in such a small amount of time.”
“The whole cattle sale industry is seeing some of the strongest sales we’ve seen for some time, it’s the strongest I’ve personally seen.”
Mr Bailey said, as an agent, he was pleased to see cattle producers being rewarded for their hard work.
“What the producers have had to endure in the last 12 to 18 months it’s just great to see the producers start to be rewarded for their efforts in running cattle through hard times,” he said.
“The most pleasing thing is we are getting extra competition across all grades of cattle which is great for the producer which should then attract more cattle to be sold at the physical market. Our physical market is well and truly exceeding the direct market.”
It’s often said in Glen Innes that when the farmers and producers are doing well then the flow on effects are highly positive for the town and its economy, and Mr Bailey was hopeful of continued strong sales continuing to help Glen Innes.
“It’s a boost for the whole town, the yards are a very important thing for the local community and the town itself.”
