“I’m the acting principal until the merit selection process is up and running, I’m certainly here in this role for term one and possibly term two,” she said.
Mrs Toms said she began working at Glen Innes Public School in 1988 and her new role is a return to the school after some time in different positions still associated with the teaching profession.
“I was appointed here in 1988 as a teacher, but I’ve actually been out of the school for the last four years working with national partnerships which was a federally funded program, I also spent one year based in Armidale as a curriculum advisor, but previous to that four years I was assistant principal here,” she said.
“I’m really excited to be here and very happy to be back, so far we have gone well, we had a staff development day on Tuesday and on Tuesday years one through six came back and Thursday was kindergartens first day.”
Mrs Toms said one of the most enjoyable aspects of her new role was seeing former students she taught now as parents bringing their own children to school.
“As a teacher I’ve spent more time in the upper primary area, it was really interesting actually saying hello to the kindergartens on their first day there was a few parents who I had taught there which was great,” she said.
“As teachers we have an amazing role where you don’t actually know what your training children for, obviously we give them a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy but you don’t know what they will grow up to be in primary level, then you see them as adults which is just lovely to see who they’ve grown up to become.”
