Elks spokesman Sid Brummell said the game started out as chance for players to catch up in the pre-season, but has since reached out to raise funds for a cause close to home.
“We wanted to get the community engaged and get more people through the gate,” he said.
Many of the local Elks players have come from a rural and farming background, so the squad have committed to raise funds for the Buy a Bale charity this weekend.
“We wanted to pick a charity that was close to home,” Brummell said.
“Glen Innes is very rural and there might come a time when we all need it.”
The Buy a Bale charity has delivered over $2 million in hay deliveries to farmers struggling in drought conditions over the past 18 months.
The Elks are calling on locals to come along on Saturday and support the club, with funds to be divided equally between the Buy a Bale charity and the maintenance of the Elks former home ground at Rugby Park.
