In what was to be their first hit out, since King’s Gym and Fitness started taking the Elks for a weekly cardio session, and the second consecutive year that they have headed down to Yamba for a trial match.
The game started with a light shower and breeze which made for a more comfortable playing condition.
From the kick off the Elks showed that their hard work was paying off and choose to play a looser style of rugby, spreading the ball wider at the ruck and crashing through the defence line.
This style of play soon had the Yamba defence line spilt in two and Ranald Burridge crashed over for his first of two.
Fergus McIntosh lead the team well in attack busting his way through many tackles, along with the other front row John Dowling and Henry Burridge.
Cameron Amos playing scrum half steered the forward play around the park well, which resulted in Adam Morris playing an attacking style of fly half to slide through the defence and go in under the posts.
The final score was 15-5.
One Zero Communications in Glen Innes provided what is planned to become a perpetual trophy for the annaul Yamba vs Glen Innes Trial Match.
In the second game against Woolgoolga, the Elks again pushed the ball wider from the ruck, showing great fitness and strength at the breakdown.
This allowed the back line to practice their set moves, quickly resulting in the newest recruit Blaine Newberry slicing through an unexpected backline to score under the post.
Blaine’s clearing kicks and hard runs showed he will be a valued asset at the club.
The demolition continued and Dylan Ferris, who drove down from Brisbane, showed that his recent trainings with the QLD Reds was showing off and he also tore the opposition apart with great speed and strength.
Dylan managed to score two under the posts.
Cameron Amos again showed leadership and style in the second half and managed to dummy and dance his way to the line.
The final score was 27-5.
The Elks fresh from the off season showed great style, strength, structure and team work the whole day.
In what was a great trial and bonding experience, it should prove the Elks will be a force to deal with in first grade.
The Elks continue their pre-season gathering with a public event at the Glen Innes Bowling Club this Saturday the 28th at 12pm.
We will be raising money for ‘Buy a Bale,’ a foundation helping drought stricken farmers.
