A 51-year-old man from Old Flats, who was piloting the micro-light, along with his passenger, a 55-year-old Albion Park woman, died when the light aircraft crashed into a property off Nine Mile Rd, near Glen Innes on Sunday morning.
The names of the pair who were killed are not expected to be made public.
New England Acting Inspector John Walkowiak said the families of the pair have requested privacy in the wake of their shock loss.
"[The man and woman] were staying at the property when the accident occurred," he said, adding there were only visiting the area.
"The families are very distraught."
On Monday, specialist investigators combed the scene for a second day as they try and piece together what went wrong just before 10.30am on Sunday.
"The plane and scene has been examined by the Police Aviation Investigation Support Unit, and they have finished their investigation today," Acting Inspector Walkowiak said on Monday
Acting Inspector Walkowiak said the investigators were helping local detectives to compile a report for the coroner and would provide expert advice on any mechanical problems, conditions and any other factors which could have contributed to the fatal crash.
On Monday afternoon, the wreckage of the plane was moved to a holding yard where it will once again be the subject of investigations, this time by Hang Gliding Federation of Australia. The aircraft was registered to that organisation.
