Anzac Park was overflowing with locals who witnessed wreaths being laid by representatives from community groups, charities and returned servicemen’s organisations.
Mayor Colin Price made an impassioned speech as did pupils from Glen Innes’ Primary and High Schools who spoke about their grandfathers and their war time service.
“This year’s ceremony has particular importance with the Gallipoli centenary,” the Mayor said.
“It was good to see people taking their time to pay respects to those who sacrificed so they may enjoy the freedoms they enjoy today.”
Veterans including Allan Evans who served in Korea and Vietnam also placed a wreath.
Glen Innes RSL sub branch President Gordon Taylor’s speech focused on George Henry Kelly, a Glen Innes resident who fought in World War two.
Mr Taylor said he was encouraged to see so many people attend the ceremony.
“It was pleasing to see so many people in Anzac Park to pay their respects,” he said.
“I was happy to see so many young families because they will be the ones who will be carrying on this tradition well into the future.”
