AN INMATE has been charged with escaping custody after allegedly stealing a prison garbage truck to flee a Glen Innes jail this week.
But his time on the run was just a matter of hours after police claim he was spotted by an off-duty Corrective Services officer, about 10km out of Grafton.
The inmate was placed into police custody and taken to Grafton Police Station where he was charged with escaping lawful custody and illegal use of a vehicle.
He was refused bail by police to appear in court on Tuesday, November 24.

► REMEMBER WHEN?
The Glen Innes Town Hall 100 years ago in 1915 gaily bedecked with flags for a Red Cross dance.
The elderly chaperones are in black and the girls in white or pale colours; many men wear white gloves.
One hundred years on, from November 28 until December 5, Red Cross will again have the Town Hall gaily bedecked, and this time with dozens of Christmas Trees.
Do get to see this splendid display and support the Red Cross in its work, just as needed and important as it was in World War One, 100 years ago.
