Glen Innes Pool manager Keith Watts said renowned local lifeguard trainer Jeff Moss took staff through various scenarios that they might encounter this summer.
“The training was intensive and covered all the bases that the community would want our staff to have in their capacity at the pool,” he said.
“I’m confident they will now be able to handle any situation that is put before them this summer.
“Their skills are also kept up with fortnightly training which has come in handy on the few occasions we have been called upon to use them.”
Lifeguard trainer Jeff Moss said all the Glen Innes crew completed the training successfully.
“We covered how to use oxygen, defibrillation training, basic rescue technique, the importance of supervision, resuscitation technique and spinal management, so it is a very comprehensive training course,” he said.
“Overall the most important thing is that lifeguard’s keep their eye on the people in the pool at all times, complacency is dangerous around water.”
Lifeguard Kylie McAllister said all the lifeguards at the pool took their responsibilities seriously and that keeping watch over swimmers at the pool is only part of their job.
“We also give swimming lessons and teach water confidence because there are a lot of adults who did not get the opportunity to learn to swim or have had unfortunate experiences that have kept them from the water due to fear,” she said.
“We give these lessons after work and after pool hours and in the learn to swim pool and we are proposing that these will kick off after the busy Christmas season.”
