A STATE government scholarship program that assists in developing emerging artistic talent and helped a local artist kick-start her business, is open for applications again.

The program has 100 scholarship grants available valued at $10,000 each for rural and regional artists over the next four years.
In August last year, Dundee-based artist Ashley Hansell was one of 16 artists in the state to receive an inaugural $10,000 scholarship and it has already made a huge impact on her life and future plans.
“The first purchase I made was a new sewing machine, as my old one had parts that didn’t work quite right,” she said
“The grant has really changed my life, I had been using recycled, reused and repurposed equipment, now I can purchase bundles of organic fabric, and it’s so wonderful to be acknowledged for my hard work.
“This opportunity will see SPUNKIT bloom and reach its full potential as a fashion label sooner rather than later.”
Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall encouraged young artists to apply for the scholarships.
“This scholarship program helps our young regional artists aged between 18 and 25 develop their careers and connect with arts organisations and training opportunities,” he said.
“Ashley operates her own small business designing and making clothing and this scholarship has allowed her business, SPUNKIT Designs, to purchase new equipment and expand her business opportunities.
“I encourage other young artists in the region to apply of this scholarship which will go a long way in helping to develop their talent and pursue their goals.”
The first 16 inaugural scholarships were awarded in August 2015, and applications are open until February 1, 2016 for the remaining nine for 2015/16.
