NORTHERN Tablelands MP Adam Marshall has backed the chorus of concern and slammed the “lenient” sentence handed to four people who violently attacked two officers.

Mr Marshall said he was disgusted after hearing the two men and women were not given a jail term for assaulting the female and male senior constables in Glen Innes in 2014.
“I am at a loss as to the reasoning behind this decision – what sort of message does it send to the public and to our local police?” he said.
“Letting these offenders off with a slap on the wrist and a ‘don’t do it again lecture’ is simply not acceptable and doesn’t meet with the community’s expectations.”
Both officers had to be treated for various injuries after they were repeatedly punched in the head and kicked, and were threatened by one offender who attempted to grab one of their firearms.
Mr Marshall said he had spoken with the attorney-general’s office and welcomed a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions to review the sentence.
“I’m pleased the DPP will be reviewing Judge English’s ridiculously light sentences and I hope her decision is not only appealed, but ultimately overturned and tougher penalties imposed,” he said.
