The Glen Innes fire and rescue service were called to a report of a house fire in Short Street with possible persons trapped inside the building.
Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and found that it was actually a garage fully involved in fire with a car inside.
The fire was also impacting on the house with the adjacent wall and eves also on fire.
The radiant heat from the fire had started a blaze in the roof space of the adjoining house.
Glen Innes Fire Station Commander Matt Goldman said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went to work with a line of 38mm hose and with fast fire suppression internally prevented the fire from spreading any further into the house.
“A second line of 38mm hose was deployed from the hazmat composite to bring the fire under control,” he said.
“Upon further investigation we determined there was a possibility of asbestos in the building and garage so we used a used a solution to render the possible asbestos situation safe.
“The fire took a little over half an hour to extinguish and no injuries were reported as the occupants of the house self-evacuated prior to the brigade’s arrival and for our firefighters this is a good save because there would have been only minutes before the whole structure would have been alight .”
