Council is encouraging local youth and the young at heart to come along to the North Skate skating rink in Glen Innes on Wednesday July 6 for an afternoon of culture and creativity.
In keeping with this year’s theme, “Songlines: The Living Narrative of Our Nation”, Council presents a celebration from 2pm to 4.30pm that includes decorating your own tapping sticks, with paint and sticks supplied by Centacare. Duke Bailey will host a Hip-Hop workshop, and Pathfinders and Armajun Aboriginal Health Service will be jointly facilitating a Drum Beat session.
NAIDOC week is celebrated by Australians from all walks of life, with this year’s national events happening from Sunday, 3 July to Sunday, 10 July. Glen Innes Severn Council is committed to respect for, and acknowledgment of, the importance of Aboriginal culture, and celebration of the history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Manager of Community Services, Janine Johnson said council is pleased to have an opportunity to organise and promote this celebration.
“Council is committed to raising awareness of Aboriginal Culture within the local community. It is a way to involve all youth so they can learn more about Songlines and the linkages they facilitate between people and country, and for the community to join together and appreciate the rich history and diversity of Aboriginal Culture,” she said.
Afternoon tea cake will be provided by the Glen Innes and District Community Centre and the cost of the event is $3.00 per person.
Council’s Youth Worker, Kristy Newbury, says it will be a great day for everyone.
“Please get all your family and friends together, from your young to your young at heart and bring them along for a skate or to watch, and do something special for NAIDOC Week.”
