In keeping with this year’s theme, “Songlines: The Living Narrative of Our Nation”, attendees took part in workshops that explored music, dance, and instrument making.
Ngoorabul elder, John Kirk, opened the event with a moving and inspirational Welcome to Country, and was ably assisted by Poppi-Lee Proctor to cut the cake provided by the Glen Innes and District Community Centre.
Director of Corporate and Community Services Anna Watt said she was pleased to see the extensive collaboration among agencies, business, and volunteers to ensure the success of the afternoon.
“Children had a unique opportunity to experience Indigenous culture through song and dance, and the willingness of our local businesses and agencies to work together with council to deliver this event must be commended,” she said.
Talented Aboriginal dancer and singer Bob Blair and Council’s Youth Worker Kristy Newbury ran some popular drum beat sessions with rotating groups of kids who kept the rink filled with creative sounds all afternoon.
Miss Newbury said it was an interesting day for everyone.
“Duke Bailey from Pathfinders had lots of takers for his Hip-Hop work shop,” she said.
“With so many children participating, he had to get kids working in three groups and I heard some great raps about living in the bush.
“The Centacare staff commented that their tapping sticks painting sessions were a hit and they will run this kind of group creativity again.”
Miss Newbury said the skating rink managers where very impressed with some of the sounds coming out of the party room.
“Many of the families and the kids thanked us and said they really enjoyed the event,” she said.
“Armajun provided afternoon tea for everyone with some extra fruit going home with the children.”
