Police and paramedics were called to a home on Davy Street about 9.30pm on Saturday night after reports of an altercation.
A 35-year-old man was found dead, stabbed several times. Police searched a neighbouring property and arrested 27-year-old Dylan John Bailey, charging him with murder.
"They were at a mutual friend's house," Inspector Chris Sammut said. "We believe the men were known to each other."
The stabbing came after a fight broke out during a dinner party and occurred in front of several people, the ABC reported.
Mr Bailey was refused bail and was to face Bathurst Local Court on Sunday.
