After almost a decade looking after the Fairfax Media’s newspapers in the region, Jenny Baldwin is heading into retirement, which will see her get to spend more time with here grandchildren as well as look after wildlife that need a home.
She has worked with many staff throughout the region, and over the past decade has worked closely with the managers and editors of the Examiner.
Jenny started with Rural Press at Inverell 32 years ago, back before our work was done on computers, and no one could have imagined there would one day be a Glen Innes Examiner website which could deliver news and videos as events happened.
Jenny started working at The Inverell Times in the advertising department back in 1984, after moving from radio station 2NZ where she had worked as a copy writer.
To begin with she worked in sales part-time, before becoming a full-time staff member then later sales manager.
In the late 1980s, the previous manager at Inverell was leaving and Jenny and the editor at the time were both considered for the manager’s position.
Over the last decade she has been the regional manager for Glen Innes, Inverell and three other newspapers in the area.
She became greatly appreciated by the newspaper staff at all those sites.
That was largely due to her ability to treat all people well, and the day-to-day interest she took in what all the newspapers and the work of the staff.
Jenny also served as a councillor with Country Press NSW, an industry body that represented newspapers across regional NSW, over the past 10 years.
I worked as editor of The Inverell Times over most of the final eight years of Jenny’s time as manager and we enjoyed a great working relationship.
She was a great mentor when it came to managing people.
I later became group editor of four of Jenny’s five papers, and it is difficult to imagine carrying on our without her, but I wish her well in retirement, as I’m sure all my colleagues do.
