The Magpies had four of their junior teams make their respective Grand Final’s and but for the bounce of the ball in the under 10’s, could have had three of the four finish with flag’s on Saturday.
Magpies club spokesman Adrian Bruce said wet and muddy conditions greeted the Under 10’s.
“They were up against a quick and slippery Armidale side, but this did not deter the Magpies with Toby Bruce going over the line first to score and convert his own try,” he said.
“Armidale were quick to respond and then Glen Innes’ Angus Cameron scored next and converted his own try.
“The game was tight and when Kolby Martin received the ball and ran straight through the defence to get over the line to score and then kick the conversion, the game ended in an 18 all draw.
“In extra time the young Magpies dropped the ball and Armidale grabbed it and ran through the defence to end up winning 22 to 18 in a nail bitter.”
A fourth premiership was in sight for the girls in the SLT and they delivered.
The SLT girls put in an incredible team effort to win 6-4 against a strong and determined Inverell side,”Mr Bruce said.
“Gabbi Panebianco kicked a penalty goal and then went across the line to score which gave the girls the lead.
Gabbi deseverdly won player of the match and Emilie Hodge was again a great asset winning the Best and Fairest, special mention to Kristal Crossley and Claudia Chaffey and the whole team played a great game and did their job well, the girls have done their families and town proud.”
The Under 14s ran on the field knowing they had a tough job ahead of them against a massive and well drilled Moree side.
“Bailey Dejong and Nick Cave went over for tries with Nick Cave converting his own try but unfortunately the 14’s couldn’t keep Moree out and went down 26 – 10.
Mr Bruce said it was great to see Mead Park full of supporters with the hill covered in spectators for the Under 16’s.
“They ran on the field ready to win their Grand Final and that is exactly what they did,” he said.
“Up against Inverell, the Magpies were not going to let this one slip through their fingers, they made hard hitting runs and their defence was unbelievable.
“The boys were strong, fit and ready to play their hearts out, with Mitch Taylor crossing the line out wide with an exciting try and Zac Donald Arnold and Ji van her Wardeen crossing for a try each.
“Bayden Grob converted one try, with the team keeping Inverell to zero points, the 16’s won the game with an amazing team effort, every player in the team was exceptional and never gave up, playing out the entire game with some great plays and communication amongst the boys.”
The Under 16’s outplayed their rivals to win their Grand Final 14 nil.
Mr Bruce said the club was proud of the four teams that made their Grand Finals and thanked them and all the Magpie teams for a great year of Rugby League.
