A new club has joined this summer’s Glen Innes and District Cricket Association competition and they are hoping to match it with 2015/16 season winners Emmaville.
There will be five local club teams participating in this year’s season with new club the Club Hotel Cavaliers, led by Greg Wilkins, joining the program with a long player list to ensure they will be competitive.
First round action sees a replay of last season’s Grand Final with Railway Tavern seeking revenge against Emmaville at King George oval.
The other game of the round will pit Kings Gym up against the New England Club Colts at Lynch oval
The Club hotel Cavaliers have the bye and must wait another week to start their 2016/17 campaign.
All games should start by 1pm and are 40 over innings.
Glen Innes Cricket Association President Nigel Sharman confirmed the points system for the coming season will be three points awarded for a win, a loss gains one point and a forfeit will see no points allocated.
“We have a bonus points system this season which will give one premiership point for any team that bowls their opposition out in the allocated overs,” he said.
“A bonus point will also be awarded to any team that scores 200 plus runs within the allocated overs.
“Emmaville won last year's comp after not fielding a team for a few seasons so we know that any team can take the title if they are good enough, the bonus points might determine who gets into the Grand Final and who doesn’t.”
Mr Sharman said the players are excited about the new team joining the action this summer and he is hoping the Cavaliers do well this season.
Sharman added that representative cricket would be a feature of this summer’s action.
“After making the Connelly Cup final last season the five Glen Innes clubs are keen to boost the local cricket standard and go one step further this season,” he said
“We are keen to go one better than last season in the representative competition and with Nathan Purvis looking after the rep side of things I am confident of a good result this summer.”
