Lily’s mother Stacey Cooke said she has been travelling recently, representing the New England North West Squad for swimming.
“She entered the New England North West short course championships and all of her swims there she did PB’s and placed about six in her age,” Ms Cooke said.
“Recently she’s been to Moree and Sawtell.
“In Sawtell she took 12 seconds off one swim and all the rest were PB’s for that day placing around 5th in her age.”
The event, which was in late October, saw Lily competing against some of the best coastal swimmers in the district.
“She’s got a Tamworth swimming carnival coming up, [representing] the Glen Innes swimming club,” Ms Cooke said.
“Then she’s also got the long course championships in Tamworth coming up too.”
Last week Lily was awarded October’s Sports Person of the Month by the Sports Council Committee.
“It’s more of a fun thing for her than serious,” Ms Cooke said.
“She asked me why she won [Sportsperson of the Month] and I said it’s because you have fun and have a go and try your hardest.
“She just wants to go to these carnivals and have fun and meet new people.”
The 9-year-old St Joseph’s School student said, while she has had much success, her favourite part about swimming in competitions was getting the opportunity to meet new people from around the region.
“All of the carnivals I’ve done I have made friends,” Lily said.
“It really doesn’t matter if you lose or if you win because it’s a sport and in sport you just need to be having fun.”
