Glen Innes Severn Council Director of Infrastructure Services, Keith Appleby said council works were now in progress and were predicted to take a few weeks to complete, weather permitting.
“We’ve had some general storm damage across the Local Government Area that we’re still working through,” Mr Appleby said.
“There is some significant works to be done and I think it will take a couple of weeks to finish.
“We’re also currently identifying the root cause [to the damage], which is drainage issues.
“Now that we’ve got a dedicated team looking after drainage we’re fixing up these underlying issues as we go.”
The road works currently underway in Glen Innes include George Street and Shannon Vale Road.
Works on Wrigley Lane will also commence in one to two months time.
Tablelands Road in Red Range will start in the next three to four weeks while Gulf Road at Emmaville is now underway.
“We are inspecting the roads now and making them safe immediately as required,” Mr Appleby said.
Hillcrest Road at Furracabad, Kubba Jimba Road at Dundee and Camerons Road at Ilparran will also have works commencing in the upcoming weeks.
Mr Appleby hopes addressing drainage issues will prevent similar damage occurring, which will be an important task if January follows in the footsteps of last year’s rainfall totals.
The annual total hit around 900mm for 2016 with the highest monthly rainfall total of the year in January, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Rainfall over the Christmas and New Year period included 8mm recorded in Glen Innes on Christmas eve and 39mm falling just into the new year on January 2.
The current warm conditions are also prompting the possibility for wet weather with a high chance of storms predicted for Glen Innes later in the week and continuing into the weekend.
