Now John McKenny from the Glen Innes Rotary Club is organising aid to farmers and their families and is calling on the Glen Innes community to help out.
“I’ve been out there for a week and identified seven places where work needs doing urgently,” he said.
Work including painting and plumbing is needed to help restore homes and a sense of hope for these people, Mr McKenny said.
“They just aren’t getting the time because they’re spending all their time keeping stock alive from wild dogs,” he said. The community are also battling after four years of drought.
“When we went out there in September we did a lot of work but those seven properties are the ones we couldn’t get onto so they are the ones we want to go back and help,” he said.
“They’re desperate and it means so much to them … it means people from 1000km away care about what’s happening and we’re prepared to go out and do something.”
