New England Area Command Inspector Chris McKinnon said police received a tip-off that led them to the prisoner.
“Our understanding is that he effectively walked out of there, we know he was present for one muster [roll call] and not another,” he said.
“He absconded on January 27, sometime between 3:30pm and 5:30pm.
"The man was in prison for assault and domestic violence related charges.”
The 36-year-old man escaped from the Glen Innes Correctional Centre and was arrested without incident at a home in Armidale at 3am on Wednesday.
The man was taken to Armidale Police Station and charged with escape lawful custody.
He was refused bail and will appear in Armidale Local Court on Wednesday.
More details to come.
