For the first time in six years the races will be completely called off for 2017.
Emmaville Community Trust secretary Mick Scherf told The Examiner it was “just too wet”.
“The Saturday it was meant to be held we had 126mm,” he said.
“I think it has rained every day since and it’s a quagmire.
“This is the first year we’ve had to cancel it.”
And it wasn’t just Emmaville weathering the rain that weekend.
Around 91.2mm of rain was dumped in Glen Innes – smashing an all time record for the highest daily rainfall in March and almost double the month’s daily average.
I think it has rained every day since and it’s a quagmire ... this is the first year we’ve had to cancel it.
- Mick Scherf
Mr Scherf said organisers were desperately hoping for a week of fine weather – but it never came.
He said money would be lost due to the cancellation.
“All the food we’ll lose … although we’ve frozen the meat so hopefully it might last til next year,” he said.
They have given some of the dips and bread to local committees.
The races will be held next year, on the third weekend in March.
Cricket grand finals have also been called off two weekends in a row due to wet weather.
