TAKE THE LEAD: The Magpies ladies league tag side surged to top spot on the ladder after thumping the Warialda Wombats on Sunday.

The Glen Innes Magpies ladies league tag side catapulted into top spot on the Group 19 ladder in formidable style.

They took on Warialda and soared to a resounding 80 points to six victory.

Kayla Williams led the way in the pointscoring, scoring six of her team’s 14 tries and booting two goals.

Her efforts earned her the players’ player award but co-coach Mark Gallagher said everyone put their best foot forward in the win.

There wasn't a bad player on the field, they all contributed, it was just one of those games where it wasn't like a normal game because we scored so many points. - Mark Gallagher

They played well, they all put in a good effort,” he said.

“There wasn't a bad player on the field, they all contributed, it was just one of those games where it wasn't like a normal game because we scored so many points.

“We only had two reserves too so it was a good effort that way.”

While the Magpies routed the last-placed Wombats on Sunday, they have their work cut out for them this weekend.

Glen Innes head to Moree to take on the Boomerangs who always step up a gear on home soil.

Gallagher said the team is aiming to keep top spot and will have to be at their best to account for the fourth-placed Boomerangs.

“It will be a different game,” he said.

“Last time they put it to us, so they will probably be better out there. Hopefully we will get a few numbers back this week and go from there.”

Five rounds remain in the regular competition rounds and Gallagher said his team will use the upcoming matches clean up any weaknesses.

“Just their completion, making sure they don't give any cheap ball away,” he said.

“As we go into the finals we are going to be playing the top teams all the time so we have to make sure we complete everything we can and put the pressure on them.”
