Past years have seen a number of local luminaries immortalised in print, paint or sculpture, and this year promises to be no different. Patricia Turner, who is curating the exhibition alongside Ray Burgess, said there’s still time to start on a photograph or a painting in acrylics to meet the August 1 deadline. Oil painters may be pushing it, however.
“We have a rule about no wet paints, just like the Archibald’s,” she said.
While better-known subjects may appeal to gallery-goers, Mrs Turner said the judge is much more concerned with technique. This year’s judge is New England Regional Art Museum curator Rachael Parsons, who will be staying on for the gala opening to deliver a discourse on her adjudication.
There are financial incentives to encourage participation, with $450 for first prize and $250 for second in each of three categories: photography, 2D (any media) and 3D (any media). This is thanks to sponsorship from Howard Eastwood, White Rock Wind Farm, Regional Australia Bank and the Glen Innes Art Gallery (which hosts the event), among others.
Mrs Turner said the gallery raised its contribution to the prize pool through its film afternoon at the Chapel Theatre screening of Mr Turner earlier this year.
Up to 28 entries have been received in earlier Archies, and not just from local artists.
“They come from across the region and from South East Queensland and as far as Tamworth,” she said.
With the Glen Archies now recognised as a regional event, Mrs Turner said it’s a good opportunity for local artists to demonstrate their skills to a wide audience.
“It’s always a very important event on the local calendar.”
Glen Archies entries are available for sale (at the artist’s discretion) so the exhibition is also an opportunity for purchasers to secure an original depiction of a familiar face to add to their collection.
The gala night begins at 4pm on Saturday, August 5 with refreshments and entertainment provided by Phil Hines, and all are invited.
“It’s always a lovely evening,” Mrs Turner promised.
