Police have arrested and charged the 18 year-old driver of a car involved in a fatal crash in the state’s Northern Tablelands last weekend. His 19-year-old female passenger died.
The crash of the Holden Commodore utility vehicle happened late on Saturday night near a bend on Shannon Vale Road in Glen Innes. The vehicle left the road and hit a tree.
Paramedics treated the passenger at the scene but she died later in hospital. The driver was taken to hospital in Tamworth without life-threatening injuries. Police say he was treated and released from hospital.
They have not named him but say he was charged at Glen Innes police station with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle.
They also accuse him of having “misleading number plates”, being an unaccompanied learner, performing burnout and having defective tyres.
He has been granted bail and is to appear in court on September 27.
